Jean-Antoine WATTEAU (Valenciennes, 1684 - Nogent-sur-Marne, 1721) The judgement of Paris / Le jugement de Pâris ca. 1718 - 1721 In front of Mercury, Paris tends to Venus the golden apple, the prize of her triumphant beauty. Her rivals, Minerva equipped with a shield, and Juno with her peacock withdraw. The sensuality of the pearly nude is inspired by Rubens, one of the Watteau’s favorite painters.:
